Synopsis
A feel-good origins story inspired by true events, Another League tells the story of a group of pioneering girls and an ambitious promotor who changed the history of women's football in Spain. In early 1970s Spain, when Francoist ideologies are still deeply rooted in society, a group of young girls decide to play football in a country that does not see a place for them in the sport. Among them is 16-year-old Nati, who has an innate talent and a love for the beautiful game. She is prepared to play behind her disapproving mother’s back, and to withstand people laughing at and insulting her and her teammates. The women have no official support, no team anthem, and no permission, but their passion for the game is bigger than any rulebook. Along the way, they find an unexpected ally in a visionary sports promoter, and together, against the odds, they will challenge the status quo. Fast forward to today, Spain are the reigning world champions after winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.
Awards & Reviews
“An emotional portrait of collective determination, where the simple gesture of kicking a ball acquired a much greater political and social meaning.”
