Synopsis
A searing, morally thorny tale set in early 1990s Mexico, featuring a screenplay by legendary Mexican scriptwriter Guillermo Arriaga (BABEL, 21 GRAMS, THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA), UPON OPEN SKY is the directorial debut film of his children Mariana and Santiago Arriaga. In this electrifying tale of revenge, two teenage brothers Fernando and Salvador decide to take a road trip to the border between Mexico and the US to track down the man responsible for the car accident that caused their father’s death. Joined by Paula, the stepsister they have only just met, the three siblings embark on a tense journey into adulthood which, ultimately, will have them come to terms with the loss of their father. With a score from Ludovico Einaudi and set across a rugged arid landscape, UPON OPEN SKY is a powerful thriller imbued with youthful rage that questions forgiveness and love within the family, as each of the siblings learn about themselves and the world.
